Music at All Souls

All Souls has a rich history of music-making. With visually and sonically impressive sanctuary instruments, several choirs, and a richly reverberant acoustic, All Souls NYC offers its community a soul-nourishing music experience every week.

All Souls Choir

The All Souls Choir is an auditioned sanctuary choir made up of professional and highly skilled volunteer singers. Director of Music Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez leads the choir in hymns and two choral anthems every Sunday from Labor Day to Memorial Day and large-scale musical offerings for special services like Christmas Eve and Easter. The choir’s thirteen professional singers offer solos throughout the choral season and provide service music during the summer. The choir’s repertoire spans eras and genres from Renaissance polyphony to the music of living composers. The All Souls Choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 6-8pm, Sundays from 10-11am, and performs on Sundays for the 11:15am service.

Community Choir

Trent Johnson, our organist and Assistant Music Director, provides service music on the sanctuary organ throughout the calendar year and directs the All Souls Community Choir. The choir provides a weekly opportunity for congregation members to develop their singing abilities, and regular opportunities to perform in worship. The choir rehearses every Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm.

The Children’s Choir

James Backmon leads the All Souls Children’s Choir, which provides an opportunity for children to explore their passion for music and develop their singing skills. Whether a beginner or young singer with previous experience, all are welcome to join. Through rehearsals and performances, they will enhance their vocal abilities, build confidence, and create lasting friendships. The Children’s Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings from 10:30-11:15am. To inquire about your child joining the choir, email our Religious Education Director, Chris Rogutsky, by clicking below.

Our Instruments

The sanctuary organ was built in 1989 by the Holtkamp Organ Company of Cleveland, whose instruments are found around the city in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Juilliard School.

The sanctuary piano is a Steinway B, recently purchased as part of a sanctuary renovation. After the renovation, the acoustics of the space were restored to a richly resonant acoustic.
