The Simplicity Complex: Why our health and safety lie in the balance
Emerging infectious diseases, novel viruses, zoonosis, SARS, Ebola, Zika, COVID-19, H5N1 (Bird Flu) – epidemics of chronic health conditions, climate change, environmental degradation – we are flooded with information about risks and threats. Either you have the science literacy to decode the recent JAMA report on fluoride and lower IQs, or you are left with a public service announcement, where Mayor Adams is downing a glass of tap water, proclaiming: “I love New York water. Drink up New Yorkers.”
Chris has spent her professional life exploring how health and safety information has long been either confoundingly complex or overly simplified, a “science lite” for the masses.
She calls this the Simplicity Complex.
And that’s what she’ll be exploring with us during this session. You might want to bring one of your favorite examples or memories along with you.
