Building Neuroinclusive Spiritual Places

February 4 @ 5:00 am - 6:00 am EST

In recent years, the Neurodiversity Paradigm has gained increasing visibility, but what exactly is it, and how can it be incorporated into spiritual programming and development? This talk will provide an overview of the Paradigm, specifically focusing on autistic needs and perspective.

We will take a strengths-based approach to understanding what it means to be autistic and the differences and difficulties that can arise, including cognitive, sensory, and social challenges. Additionally, we will explore often overlooked groups within the autistic population, including those who were assigned female at birth, are BIPOC, those whose first language isn’t English, and/or are members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We will discuss the difficulties these groups may face and how to provide adequate support. Finally, we will explore the role of autistic people in spiritual life and how to create inclusive environments. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on this important topic.

Kae Peterman will facilitate this talk. Kae (they/them) is an autistic, nonbinary, trans-ADHDer currently getting a dual Masters in Social Work and Public Health from New York University. They have worked on multiple community organizing projects and advocate for trans and neurodiverse rights. In their free time, they enjoy singing, meditating, and playing board games.
