What’s a Big Read?
We’ll all read the same book over the summer, and starting in the fall, it will become a touchstone for activities throughout the church year.
Great, what’s the book?
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. It’s a modern-day retelling of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, set in Appalachia.
Can we really spend a whole year on one book?
Yes! Along with sessions about the book itself, most activities will use it as a starting point, exploring themes from community and the natural world to addiction and loss. We’re thinking broadly here – lectures, workshops, cooking events, films, museum trips, etc.
What if I haven’t read the book?
No problem! You might want to skip the book discussions to avoid spoilers, but the other events will be open to all, and these themes are universal.
The Big Read concept aims to broaden our understanding of ourselves and our community through the power of a shared reading experience. The goals of the Big Read at All Souls are to inspire meaningful conversations and build stronger connections as a community by exploring a common book and its themes.
