Food Matters Study Group

December 8 @ 1:45 pm - 2:30 pm EST

This past fall Galen Guengerich spoke powerfully about the great impact of reduced meat consumption on human and planetary health.

Galen observed:

The simple solution to global warming: reduce meat [and milk] consumption by at least half [, and, thereby, reduce greenhouse gasses sufficiently to stave off catastrophic climate consequences pending society’s transformation to clean energy]. … That turns out to be good all-around. It’s good for the planet, it’s good for animals and it’s also good for our health and well-being as individuals. … If you find the prospect daunting, think of it as spiritual practice and not merely as dietary preference.

Through guest speakers, group discussions and other means, our newly formed study group, Food Matters, will go beneath the surface and examine how consuming more healthy plant-based foods and less meat will benefit individual, planetary and animal well-being, altogether, and how a healthy plant-based way of eating may yield such positive physical and spiritual benefits as to be experienced as an act of personal gain rather than sacrifice.

We will also explore how our stature as a religious community might affect our approach to eating. And we will host potluck meals that will offer delicious plant-based meals.

If you would like to participate in this study group or are just interested in learning more about us, then please join us on Sunday December 8th. If you can’t attend but would like more information, then please contact Kevin Billet at (716) 698-3166 or [email protected].
