SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina
DESCRIPTION:Lectio divina (“divine reading”) is a contemplative practice of reading sacred texts. The method involves four successive ways of reading: lectio (read)\, meditatio (reflect)\, oratio (respond)\, contemplatio (rest). In this five-part series (one in-person on Sunday 2/16\, and the rest on Wednesday evenings through Zoom)\, we will practice lectio divina together\, drawing on religious and secular texts across traditions and eras\, as a practice of sensitizing ourselves to the voice of the divine as it communicates off the page\, and in our daily lives.

SUMMARY:Reflection and Meditation on the Eightfold Path with Dr. Pilar Jennings
DESCRIPTION:We remain cautious about Covid\, and we ask that you please test on Sunday morning if you are attending this program. Also be sure to dress warmly since we’ll keep windows open. \nIn this in-person series\, Pilar Jennings will explore the method for awakening known as the 8-Fold Path.  This foundational teaching in Buddhist psychology offers a clear roadmap for exploring and working through our many interpersonal challenges and collective concerns.  Themes will include the role of ethics\, the impact of mindfulness\, and the potential joy accessed through wisdom. This is the first session\, and they will all be standalone so it’s fine to come to one or all. \nThe program will include guided meditations\, discussion\, and a Dharma talk.  All are welcome! \nDonations are suggested to support Pilar. Thank you for giving what you can. You can give by Venmo\, Paypal\, Zelle\, check or cash at the program. \nPilar is a psychoanalyst in private practice with a focus on the clinical applications of Buddhist meditation. She has been working with patients and their families through the Harlem Family Institute since 2004. She is a Visiting Lecturer at Union Theological Seminary\, a guest lecturer at Columbia University\, and a faculty member of the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science. In our Mindfulness | Meditation | Buddhism program\, she has taught several short courses\, including “Working with Difficult Emotions – A Buddhist and Psychotherapeutic Approach\,” which explored a range of emotions from a spiritual and clinical perspective. More recently she taught “How To Be in Relationship.” Her website is drpilarjennings.com

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Venerable Gendun
DESCRIPTION:Venerable Gendun will preach on Sunday morning and lead us in a conversation about the sermon that afternoon. The sermon is about intercontemplative dialogue: a path between rejection and assimilation.\nDescription: The Dalai Lama once stated that all religious violence springs from a lack of experience with one’s own tradition. When practices and doctrines harden into identities\, the other tends to get nullified through either rejection or assimilation. Where spiritual practice has transformed awareness in contrast\, the heart opens\, and a caring space unfolds in which the alterity of the other is welcomed for both its challenge and affirmation. The sermon will open the space for finding a way forward together. \nVenerable Losang Gendun has dedicated nearly four decades to practicing Buddhism and has served as a Bhikshu (Buddhist monk) in the Tibetan tradition for the past 18 years. Prior to his ordination\, he worked in diverse fields such as palliative care\, technology\, refugee organizations\, and commercial management. His extensive training includes ten years of studying Buddhist philosophy and practice in monasteries across France\, India\, Nepal\, and Myanmar. Additionally\, he spent over four years in retreat\, immersing himself in Tibetan sutra and tantra\, as well as the Burmese Theravada Forest Tradition.\nFor the last 15 years\, Ven. Gendun has been a dedicated teacher\, sharing his knowledge of Buddhist philosophy\, psychology\, and meditation worldwide. He serves the aspirations of H.H. the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche as part of the FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition). Ven. Gendun is also a member of Mind & Life Europe\, a multidisciplinary laboratory that brings together researchers and contemplative practitioners to explore the nature of experience. \nBeyond his Buddhist affiliations\, Ven. Gendun serves as an interreligious canon at the Peace Cathedral in Tbilisi\, Georgia\, and feels at home at a Mevlavi Sufi dargah in Istanbul. In 2023\, he founded The Buddha Project\, which engages in long-term guidance for Buddhist meditators\, scientific research\, art projects\, and intercontemplative social engagement.

SUMMARY:Adult Education: The Sacred Depths of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Ursula Goodenough is one of the best-known voices in the religious naturalist orientation. She is author of the book\, “The Sacred Depths of Nature” which\, examines cosmology\, evolution\, and cell biology\, celebrates the mystery and wonder of being alive\, and suggests that this orientation might serve as the basis for “planetary ethic” that draws from both science and religion. \nUrsula is a Professor of Biology Emerita at Washington University. She has discussed religious naturalism in essays\, college classes\, and as part of blogs and television and radio productions. She participated in conversations with the Dalai Lama sponsored by the Mind and Life Institute. Her work has been discussed in “Religious Naturalism Today” by Jerome Stone and “The Promise of Religious Naturalism” by Michael Hogue. \nSome examples of her thoughts and writing can be seen at the following links: https://deeptransformation.network/posts/32621860
