SUMMARY:No Kings March & Poster Making
DESCRIPTION:No Kings March NYC! \nSouls in Service invites you to join fellow congregants on Saturday\, June 14\, for the No Kings March! This is a national call to peacefully protest the authoritarian\, anti-democratic actions we see around us and to express our UU values by standing up for democracy\, human rights\, and the planet. These nationwide marches are timed as a counter-declaration to the military parade planned in Washington\, D.C.\, as a presidential birthday celebration. The NYC March is scheduled for 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.\, starting at Bryant Park. You can sign up for the No Kings March\, sponsored by the Hands Off coalition (including Indivisible and 50501) [HERE]. \nSouls in Service will be hosting a poster-making session from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Ware Room (all materials provided). After poster-making\, we’ll leave at 1:00\, taking the 6 train to Grand Central.  Li Yu (All Souls Board member) has invited us to join Sister District (https://sisterdistrict.com/)\, a democracy-promoting organization he volunteers with.  We will meet them at the Ground Central Coffee Shop\, at 441 Lexington Ave (Grand Central) at 1:30 and walk over to Bryant Park together.   If you cannot join us for poster-making\, meet us at this location by 1:30. \nHave you signed up for the Defend Democracy Digest newsletter produced by a member of All Souls? Sign up here democracydigest@proton.me. \nJoin us! We are stronger together. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes\, a hat\, and to bring water and snacks.

SUMMARY:The Annual Bellows Lecture: "Reconstructing our Unitarian History: Perils and Possibilities"
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Bellows Lecture sponsored by the All Souls Historical Society will be given on\nFRIDAY\, MAY 16TH\nby Rev. Wayne B. Arnason:\n“Reconstructing our Unitarian History: Perils and Possibilities” \nClick HERE to join on Zoom \nPasscode: AS \nAs a congregation that has held famous leaders and events\, All Souls Church has a monumental place in the history of Unitarianism. The approach we often take to teaching our history has also been “monumental”. Monumental histories focus on the “great ones”\, the people who achieved or represent major milestones that define the chapters of our common story. The peril of the monumental approach to history is leaving out stories and characters that don’t fit our heroic narratives. Can the history of our faith be reconstructed as our values and our perspectives change? Drawing on new research and challenging projects in historical renovation\, this lecture will explore whether constructing a new story requires tearing down an old one. As a case study in historical reconstruction\, we will examine the relationships of the ministers of All Souls Church to Rev. Egbert Ethelred Brown\, minister of the Harlem Unitarian Church from 1937 to 1956. \nThe Rev. Dr. Wayne Arnason retired in 2016 from a forty-year career in Unitarian Universalist ministry serving in both parish ministry and in staff and governance roles in the Unitarian Universalist Association. Since retiring\, he has taken up his passion for history. A graduate of the Harvard Divinity School\, Wayne Arnason was recognized by Meadville Lombard Theological School in 2014 with their honorary doctorate degree for his lifetime of service. Arnason has published an institutional history of the liberal religious youth movement entitled We Would Be One (2005) and an internally published history of the UUA’s Ministerial Fellowship Committee entitled In Fellowship (2020). He is part of a team presenting the 2025 Minns Lectures entitled “Deconstructing Unitarian Anti-Racist Mythologies 1860-1920”. He currently volunteers as the Archivist of the UU Congregation in Charlottesville VA and is married to our Targeted Senior Minister\, Rev. Kathleen Rolenz.

SUMMARY:Courageous Compassion with Venerable Robina Courtin
DESCRIPTION:The development of compassion and the wish to help others\, no matter what\, is the point of the path to enlightenment\, the end result: the removal of all separateness from others and the spontaneous capacity to benefit others. Why “courageous”? Because genuine compassion encompasses all living beings\, including the harmers\, the negative ones\, not just the innocent victims. But as His Holiness the Dalai Lama says\, “Compassion is not enough: we need wisdom.” By first developing our own amazing potential by lessening attachment\, anxiety\, anger and the other limiting states of mind\, it’s then possible to develop such radical compassion. \nOrdained since the late 1970s\, Ven. Robina has worked full time since then for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications\, editor of Mandala Magazine\, executive director of Liberation Prison Project\, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom. For more information\, visit https://robinacourtin.com/ Watch the trailer for the documentary about her life here: https://www.chasingbuddhafilm.com/

SUMMARY:Adult Education: Connecting and Healing with Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Laura will invite participants to reflect on the idea of ancestors. Who are “the ancestors”? How do they affect the lives of those of us who are still living? How can we bring healing for our families from the burdens of the ones who came before us? The talk will be informed by Laura’s work as a practitioner of ancestral lineage healing through the Ancestral Medicine Network\, an international web of ritualists who offer culturally-sensitive entry points for people who wish for connection and well-being with their ancestors. You can read more about her work at elastic-portal.space.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lectio Divina
DESCRIPTION:Lectio divina (“divine reading”) is a contemplative practice of reading sacred texts. The method involves four successive ways of reading: lectio (read)\, meditatio (reflect)\, oratio (respond)\, contemplatio (rest). In this five-part series (one in-person on Sunday 2/16\, and the rest on Wednesday evenings through Zoom)\, we will practice lectio divina together\, drawing on religious and secular texts across traditions and eras\, as a practice of sensitizing ourselves to the voice of the divine as it communicates off the page\, and in our daily lives.
