SUMMARY:Be Your Own Therapist
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Be Your Own Therapist with Venerable Robina Courtin. We spend our lives being seduced by the outside world\, believing completely that happiness and suffering come from “out there.” But if we look into our hearts we can see that this is not true\, that the more we hold on to people and things and experiences\, the more dissatisfied and lonely we become. \nHappiness and suffering come from the way we perceive and interpret things\, not the things themselves. At the heart of it\, according to Buddhism\, is the instinctive clinging to a limited sense of self\, which causes us to respond with attachment\, anger and the rest. \nBy becoming deeply familiar with the workings of our own minds and hearts through meditation and purification practices – truly\, being our own therapist – we can slowly loosen the grip of ego-grasping and begin to open up our marvelous potential for clarity\, contentment\, love and the other qualities that Buddha says are innate within us. \nOrdained since the late 1970s\, Ven. Robina has worked full time since then for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications\, editor of Mandala Magazine\, executive director of Liberation Prison Project\, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom. For more information\, visit https://robinacourtin.com/ Watch the trailer for the documentary about her life here: https://www.chasingbuddhafilm.com/

SUMMARY:Heart and Tradition (Ages 6-12)
DESCRIPTION:We are standing on the side of love\, hands joined together as hearts beat as one. Emboldened by faith\, we dare to proclaim we are standing on the side of love. \n— Hymn 1014 in Singing the Journey \nIn February\, we will offer an art class celebrating two traditions – Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras! Chinese New Year is a cultural and historic celebration observed in China\, signaling the beginning of spring and the start of a new year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. In this class\, children can create pieces inspired by either of the two traditions or a combination of both! Moreover\, we will also be making a unique project to celebrate Valentine’s Day. So\, join us for a fun-filled and creative experience that embraces the spirit of different cultures and traditions! \nContact Director of Education\, Dr. Chris Rogutsky\, for more information. \nREGISTER A CHILD

SUMMARY:The History & Modern Definitions of Woke and Implications for Spiritual Life
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the term woke has become increasingly prominent in social justice and activism discussions. Understanding the history and modern definition of woke is essential for those seeking to engage in social justice conversations\, including its implications for spiritual life. \nOriginally coined in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) to describe being aware of systemic racism and oppression\, the term has evolved to encompass a broader range of social issues and identities.  At its core\, being woke involves acknowledging and actively working to dismantle systems of oppression\, particularly those based on race\, gender\, sexuality\, and class. This includes recognizing and challenging one’s own privilege and biases\, as well as advocating for marginalized communities.  From a spiritual perspective\, being woke can intersect with various belief systems and practices. For some\, it may involve recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings and working towards a more just and equitable world as a form of sacred activism. For others\, it may involve examining and challenging how their own spiritual communities have perpetuated systemic oppression. \nJoin us for this discussion facilitated by Marjorie Jean-Paul.  Marjorie has over 25 years of experience working in mission-driven organizations and is the Chief Advancement Officer at Ethical Culture Fieldston School. \nContact Director of Education\, Dr. Chris Rogutsky\, with any questions.
