SUMMARY:Unitarian Universalist Buddhist Fellowship Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Unitarian Universalist Buddhist Fellowship Convocation April 11-13\, 2025 at Bon Secours Conference Center Marriottsville\, MD featuring Lama Rod Owens \nTo register and learn more visit the UUBF website: https://uubf.org/wp/ \n“Healing\, Resiliency\, and Liberation” It seems as if we are living through an apocalypse\, struggling to learn lessons through a pervasive pandemic\, economic instability\, political unrest\, climate change\, and various forms of systematic violence. However\, this moment is also inviting us back to an authentic indigeneity. We are being asked to remember how to be in relationship to the land\, to our brokenheartedness\, and in gentle healing connections with others. In the face of so much change\, we may find it difficult to maintain our physical and emotional balance which makes resiliency such an important skill to develop right now. Resiliency is about how well we can meet the challenges of our lives with the sense of openness and curiosity that helps us to regain our balance. Balance means understanding how to return to sense of being grounded to meet challenges directly. We will explore both personal and collective resiliency through somatic based mindfulness practice\, grief work\, chanting\, and prayer. Join Lama Rod Owens as he delves into themes of spiritual abolition\, liberatory care\, grieving as care work\, as well as what it means to be a love centered agent of liberation in this moment. \nLama Rod is the Author of The New Saints: From Broken Hearts to Spiritual Warriors and Love and Rage: The Path of Liberation through Anger and co-author of Radical Dharma: Talking Race\, Love and Liberation. Lama Rod is an authorized Lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School.

SUMMARY:Managing Conflict Compassionately with Tenzin Chogkyi
DESCRIPTION:Fridays\, April11\, 18\, and 25\, 10:30am – noon on ZOOM \nThis course is suited for anyone interested in gaining insight and practice in understanding and reducing conflict. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how conflict works\, why it happens\, and practical skills and steps we can use to address conflict using an informative\, interactive\, and fun process. The aim is to improve our capacity to listen without defensiveness\, speak without offending\, find common ground\, and reach mutually satisfying solutions. \nParticipants will find that the skills learned in this training also greatly benefit their interactions at work\, at home\, and in the community. \nThis course will help you: \n\nUnderstand how and why we react to conflict\nInvestigate your own conflict style\nLearn how to manage your own emotional reactions\nReview and practice active listening skills\nExpress yourself clearly and confidently\nFind common ground and satisfying solutions\n\nClass format: This class will be presented as three 90-minute sessions using the Zoom platform. Attendance and active participation in all three sessions is required. You must have a working camera and microphone to participate. \nWe are asking for a donation of $50 for this course. The donation will be shared by the teacher and Mindfulness | Meditation | Buddhism at All Souls. That said\, no-one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Your motivation to do the course is what matters most. Class size is limited. To register\, email Rebecca Izuchokwu at rebecca@allsoulsnyc.org \nAbout the teacher: Tenzin Chogkyi (she/her/hers) is a teacher of workshops and programs that bridge the worlds of Buddhist thought\, contemplative practice\, mental and emotional cultivation\, and the latest research in the field of positive psychology. Tenzin first became interested in meditation in the early 1970s and then started practicing Tibetan Buddhism in early 1991 during a year she spent studying in India and Nepal. She completed several long meditation retreats over a six-year period and took monastic ordination with His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, practicing as a monastic for nearly 20 years. Since 2006 she has been teaching in Buddhist centers around the world and taught in prisons for 15 years. Currently based on traditional Awaswas Ohlone land\, in what is now known as Santa Cruz\, CA\, she teaches locally at Insight Santa Cruz and the Wisdom Center\, is a regular visiting teacher for the San Francisco Dharma Collective\, and Lion’s Roar Dharma Center in Sacramento. \nShe is also a certified teacher of Compassion Cultivation Training and the Cultivating Emotional Balance program. Tenzin is especially interested in bringing the wisdom of Buddhism into modern culture and into alignment with modern cultural values such as racial and gender justice and environmental awareness. She feels strongly that a genuine and meaningful spiritual path includes not only personal transformation\, but social and cultural transformation as well. \nShe loves interfaith collaboration and is a volunteer for the Interfaith Speakers Bureau of the Islamic Networks Group in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and also volunteers for Second Harvest Food Bank and the Conflict Resolution Center of Santa Cruz County. You can find her current teaching schedule as well as an archive of podcasts\, audio\, and video teachings at unlockingtruehappiness.org.

SUMMARY:Reflection and Meditation on the Eightfold Path with Dr. Pilar Jennings
DESCRIPTION:We remain cautious about Covid\, and we ask that you please test on Sunday morning if you are attending this program. If you prefer not to test\, please wear a mask. Thank you for your kindness and cooperation. \nIn this in-person series\, Pilar Jennings will explore the method for awakening known as the 8-Fold Path.  This foundational teaching in Buddhist psychology offers a clear roadmap for exploring and working through our many interpersonal challenges and collective concerns.  Themes will include the role of ethics\, the impact of mindfulness\, and the potential joy accessed through wisdom. This is the first session\, and they will all be standalone so it’s fine to come to one or all. \nThe program will include guided meditations\, discussion\, and a Dharma talk.  All are welcome! \nDonations are suggested to support Pilar. Thank you for giving what you can. You can give by Venmo\, Paypal\, Zelle\, check or cash at the program. \n— \nPilar is a psychoanalyst in private practice with a focus on the clinical applications of Buddhist meditation. She has been working with patients and their families through the Harlem Family Institute since 2004. SUMMARY:Mindful of Race
DESCRIPTION:Sun March 30th 1:30-3 pm in Ware Room \nIntroduction: “Racism is a Heart Disease\, and it’s curable!” \nHow might mindfulness help us face and dismantle racism and heal from its impacts? This is work we do in our society\, our communities\, and in our bodies. Together\, we will explore questions raised by Ruth King in her book ‘Mindful of Race’ such as: \nHow do I work with my thoughts\, fears\, and beliefs in ways that nurture the dignity of all races? How do I comfort my own raging heart in a sea of racial ignorance and violence? \nHow can my actions reflect the world I want to live in and leave to future generations?  \nHow do I advocate for racial justice without causing harm and hate\, internally and externally? \nWhile the focus of King’s book is on racism\, exploration of these questions can easily apply to the many ways in which humans are divided and conditioned to fear one another. In coming together to explore\, may we create a world in which all people are empowered to live\, to heal\, and to love. \n  \nThis session will include reading the text together\, discussing it in relation to our own experience\, and practicing together. \n  \nWednesdays April 16\, 23\, 30 5:45-6:45 pm on Zoom \n  \nApril 16 \n“Understanding Habits of Harm—Diagnosis” \nLooking at the complicated nature of race as a social construct that we must dismantle AND a lived reality through which people with shared experiences form communities to support each other. What are the common habits of harm that we might learn to address through mindfulness? \nCh 4: Six Hindrances to Racial Harmony \n\nWhite People\, Good Individuals\nInternalized Oppression\nStars & Constellations\nIntent & Impact\nCumulative Impact\nWhite Privilege\n\n  \nApril 23 \n“Mindfulness—Heart Surgery” \nCh 5: Life is Not Personal\, Permanent\, or Perfect \nWhat are the practices and orientations that support us in the difficult work of noticing and interrupting racism? \n  \nApril 30 \n“Cultivating a Culture of Care—Recovery” \nCh 17: Artistry: Cultural Medicine \nWhat is the role of creative expression in energizing us and supporting us in realizing freedom and generosity?

SUMMARY:Transforming Our Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our weekly Buddhism & Mindfulness program\, Transforming Our Suffering. This group meets every Thursday at 10 am and is led by Pamela Patton\, Assistant Minister. \nWe are currently reading and discussing Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World by Matthieu Ricard. You are most welcome to attend whether or not you’ve done the reading. We start with a short meditation; Pamela summarizes the chapter; Harry Miller reflects on the teachings\, and then we have a discussion (you can choose whether you’d like to go to a breakout room or stay in the main room for a larger group conversation). Each session is standalone\, so you can drop in whenever you wish. \nZOOM LINK \nPassword: Peace \nAbout the book: “Altruism is a careful\, detailed\, hard-nosed assessment of what is needed both for individual happiness and for the welfare of the planet. […] This book is so rich\, so diverse and\, yes\, so long that it is best kept as an inspiring resource to be consulted over many years.” – Wall Street Journal “Altruism is just what is needed to bring hope to those depressed by the violence\, war\, selfishness and corruption that surround us today. Matthieu Ricard provides convincing evidence based on both careful research and personal experience that altruism is an integral part of our nature with the desire to help others not only present in small children\, but also in many animals.” – Jane Goodal \nAbout the author: Matthieu Ricard\, born in France in 1946 and son of French philosopher Jean-François Revel and painter Yahne Le Toumelin\, is a Buddhist monk\, author of books\, translator and photographer. https://www.matthieuricard.org/en/
