SUMMARY:Women's Alliance May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Elliott\, Author. A graduate of Wellesley College\, who enjoyed 40 years working in Corporate America\, in a variety of advertising\, public relations and marketing positions. In retirement\, she has taken up creative writing and photography and become an author. To date\, she has published three books including; a children’s photo story\, “IN SNEAKERS: The Munchkin Cat whose Every Day is an Adventure” and “YOU ALL LOOK ALIKE\, A Family Memoir” which forms her topic for today’s presentation. \nWhat’s Special About a Family? – How I wrote a Memoir\n“YOU ALL LOOK ALIKE”\, Kristin Elliott’s memoir\, tells the story of growing up on Boston’s North Shore in the 50s and 60s capturing the optimism following World War II\, when a family of six dared to start a greeting card company with little funds and experience. Elliott explores the history of Beverly\, Massachusetts\, from its colonial era association with witchcraft to being the “birthplace of the American Navy.” The youngest of four\, with the card company named for her\, Kristin recounts her youth with poignancy and wit\, reminding us all of what’s special about every family. \nCome join us to dwell in the process of weaving memories into a memoir.\nBring your bag lunch.\nCoffee\, tea and dessert are provided.\nAll are welcome!

SUMMARY:Annual Angie Utt Lecture - The Simplicity Complex: Why our health and safety lie in the balance
DESCRIPTION:The Simplicity Complex: Why our health and safety lie in the balance \nEmerging infectious diseases\, novel viruses\, zoonosis\, SARS\, Ebola\, Zika\, COVID-19\, H5N1 (Bird Flu) – epidemics of chronic health conditions\, climate change\, environmental degradation – we are flooded with information about risks and threats. Either you have the science literacy to decode the recent JAMA report on fluoride and lower IQs\, or you are left with a public service announcement\, where Mayor Adams is downing a glass of tap water\, proclaiming: “I love New York water. Drink up New Yorkers.” \nChris has spent her professional life exploring how health and safety information has long been either confoundingly complex or overly simplified\, a “science lite” for the masses. \nShe calls this the Simplicity Complex. \nAnd that’s what she’ll be exploring with us during this session. You might want to bring one of your favorite examples or memories along with you. \n  \nChristina Zarcadoolas; PhD\, Sociolinguist\, Internationally Recognized Expert in Health Literacy and Public Understanding of Health and Science\, Author\, Member of All Souls NYC and the Women’s Alliance \n  \nSponsored by the All Souls Women’s Alliance\, directly following Souls In Service Pasta Bowl Potluck Lunch!
