SUMMARY:Adult Education: Children and Families in Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Connie has lived in rural Northwest North Carolina for 37 years\, teaching in the College of Education at Appalachian State University for 31 of those years. She took two year-long sabbaticals to teach in rural low-income schools and based on the second experience wrote The Lydia Year: Learning from Pre-kindergarten Children in Rural Appalachia. Reading Kingsolver’s book Demon Copperhead\, Connie was constantly reminded of the children and families with whom she worked. Come hear about her experience and life as it relates to our Big Read.

SUMMARY:Mindful Eating and Drinking
DESCRIPTION:Join All Soul’s seminary interns Ian Miles and Laura Brown-Lavoie for a four-week series of mindful eating practice in advance of the holiday season. Mindful eating is an invitation to bring awareness and gratitude into one of the most common activities of our daily life: eating! Our opening session will be drop-in where we will introduce the practice of mindful eating and drinking. \nThe subsequent three sessions will be the first three Thursdays of November\, from 6-7 PM. We will share dharma teachings and silent meditation practice over a simple nourishing vegetarian meal. Our hope is to support each other in developing practices that will help us bring peacefulness and presence to all the tables where we find ourselves this winter. \nRSVPs are not necessary\, but greatly appreciated. RSVP here.
